The video game Mordheim: City of the Damned has a great feature, that is not often found in modern RPGs: the ability for players to write their characters’ backstories.
This feature is totally optional, but it encourages players to become more invested in their characters and creates a stronger sense of attachment and ownership over their creations.
Besides, writing a character’s story can be a fun and creative exercise in and of itself, allowing players to flex their storytelling muscles and create stories that are unique and diverse, rather than being limited to a predetermined backstory.
